Nearsightedness (myopia) can cause problems beyond the difficulty to see in the distance clearly.  It is also becoming an increasingly common condition, yet we do not completely understand why some people become nearsighted or why the myopia tends to increase, especially through the teenage years.

Compared to someone with eyes which are perfectly in focus, myopes have an increased lifetime risk of developing glaucma, retinal detachments and macular degeneration.  As the level of myopia increases (the prescription becomes stronger) these risks also increase.

We know that spending consistent time outdoors in natural daylight can help reduce progression of myopia.  Studies have also shown that Atropine drops used nightly will slow down the progression as can the use of night-time rigid contact lenses (Orthokeratlogy lenses).  Both of these two latter options can come with challenges, making their use not very common.

Soft multifocal contact lenses have also been shown to slow the progression of myopia in long term, multi-centre studies, and it is this research which has led to the development of MiSight contact lenses.

A single use one-day soft contact lens brings the benefits of hygiene, comfort and ease of use to children.  In studies, wearing the MiSight lens reduced myopia progression by 59% over three years, compared to a standard one-day soft contact lens.  As well as helping to control the nearsightedness, MiSight bring the traditional advantages of contact lens wear - eg convenience, especially for sports and outdoor activities.

CooperVision, the developers of MiSight contact lenses are also donating 5% of sales in MiSight 1-day lenses to support Our Children's Vision charity.
