Privacy Policy
Effective date: May 26, 2026
This policy describes how Ocean Optometry collects and uses personal information through this website. It applies only to information collected through oceanoptometry.ca. The privacy practices that govern your in-clinic care — including your health records — are described separately under Nova Scotia’s Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) and are available at our front desk on request.
What this website does and doesn’t do
This site is a marketing site. It does not store patient records, take medical questions, or process bookings directly. We collect personal information in only two ways:
- If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address (and your name, if you provide it).
- When you visit any page on the site, our analytics tools record basic information about how the site is being used.
If you book an appointment from this site, you’ll be sent to our third-party scheduling provider, i-Clarity. We don’t see or store that information — see Booking below.
Newsletter
If you sign up for our newsletter, we use your email address to send you occasional updates from Ocean Optometry — new arrivals, practice news, and seasonal eye-care notes. Subscriber information is stored directly in this website’s own database; we do not use a third-party newsletter service such as Mailchimp.
Emails are delivered through Postmark, which processes the message in transit but does not retain subscriber lists.
We send newsletters only to people who have given us express consent, in keeping with Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time. We do not sell, rent, or trade subscriber lists.
Analytics and cookies
We use two analytics tools to understand how visitors use the site, so we can improve it:
- Google Analytics 4 — provides aggregate information about page views, traffic sources, and general usage patterns. IP addresses are anonymized by default. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all sites by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- Microsoft Clarity — records anonymous session information including mouse movements, scrolls, and clicks, and produces heatmaps that show which parts of pages people interact with. Sensitive fields (such as form inputs) are masked by default and are not recorded. We use this to improve the site’s layout and clarity; we do not use it to identify individual visitors.
Both tools set cookies in your browser. You can clear or block cookies through your browser’s settings; doing so will not affect your ability to use the site.
Booking
Online appointment booking is handled by an independent third-party scheduling provider, i-Clarity (accessed via eyeclarityappointments.com). When you book you enter their system. The information you provide (typically your name and phone number, along with your chosen appointment time) is collected and stored by them, not by Ocean Optometry. Ocean Optometry has no access to or control over i-Clarity’s handling of that information.
Where your information is stored
Newsletter subscriber information is stored on this website’s hosting infrastructure, located in Toronto, Canada. Our analytics tools (Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity), email delivery service, and booking provider are operated by companies based outside Canada (primarily in the United States). When you provide information through these services, that information may be stored or processed outside Canada and may be subject to the laws of the country where it is held. By using this site, you consent to this handling.
How we use the information we collect
- To send newsletters to people who have subscribed.
- To understand how the website is being used, so we can improve it.
- To respond to questions or requests you send to us by email.
We do not use website information for medical decisions, and we do not combine website information with patient records.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you through the website.
- Correct information that is inaccurate.
- Withdraw consent and unsubscribe from communications at any time.
- Make a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if you believe we’ve handled your information improperly.
To exercise any of these rights, contact our Privacy Officer using the details below.
Retention
Newsletter subscriber information is kept for as long as you remain subscribed, and removed within a reasonable period after you unsubscribe. Analytics data is retained according to the default retention period of each analytics provider. We do not retain personal information longer than is reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information collected through the website, including using reputable service providers and secure connections (HTTPS). No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, so while we work to protect your information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top of the page will always reflect when the policy was last revised. Material changes will be noted on the page.
